PeopleForBikes hosted an all-women’s Executive Fly-In in Washington, D.C. in September that included 17 top bicycle industry leaders focused on making biking better in America. This influential group met with members of Congress, senior staff and the Department of Interior to help advance pro-bike business and industry goals.
Critical issues discussed included support for the Outdoor Recreation’s Economic Contributions (REC) Act, which directs the federal government to quantify the outdoor recreation sector in its jobs and economic impacts report. This builds on an announcement by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell stating that the federal government will finally count the outdoor recreation impact on gross domestic product in the upcoming year. If approved, the Outdoor REC Act would ensure this is done every year, instead of just once as a pilot program.
?Participating in a fly-in focused on bipartisan legislation was an enjoyable learning experience,? said REI Flagship General Manager in D.C., Becky Smith. ?Making sure that the Commerce Department factors outdoor recreation into their calculation of GDP will give us more data points to demonstrate our economic contributions as an industry.?
Executive Fly-Ins are a key program of PeopleForBikes? Business Network, which works to organize the local, state and federal voice of business behind better bicycling in America. In order to advocate for better bicycling, leaders need a clear picture of the number of people employed, taxes paid, storefronts filled and the communities improved through bicycling.
