San Francisco celebrates National Bike Month this May, with bike related events and activities taking place all month-long. From the biggest biking day of the year, to recreational rides, you can enjoy springtime in the city from the comfort of your own bike seat. So whether you are considering navigating the city by bike for the first time, or already actively ride, these events are great ways to introduce even more San Franciscans to biking.

Bike to Work Day

Thousands of people pedaled their way to work for the 19th Annual Bay Area Bike to Work Day held May 9, and there was no shortage of fun, festivities or bicycles. From curbside rallies cheering on bike commuters at 26 Energizer Stations around the city, to the unveiling of the city’s first automated real-time bike counter on Market Street, San Francisco had a record-breaking year as citizens, non-profits and local business and city leaders joined together to celebrate the joys of biking and all of the progress made to city streets since last year’s event.

Overall, San Francisco had a record-breaking year, with bikes accounting for 76 percent of all eastbound traffic on Market Street between the hour of 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., the highest percentage since the SFMTA began counting in 1998. In the last five years, Bike to Work Day bike counts have increased 20 percent. With a more than 71 percent increase in the number of people biking between 2006 and 2011, according to the SFTMA, more people are biking than ever before.
